Attempted Murder Charge For Antioch Road Rage Shooting Suspect
ANTIOCH (BCN) -- A Contra Costa County Superior Court judge revoked bail Wednesday for an Antioch man who was out of custody last week pending trial in a 2008 assault case when he allegedly shot a man in an apparent road rage incident in Antioch.
Cornelius Brown, 24, who also had an address in San Francisco, was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on charges of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and possession of marijuana for sale.
He also faces enhancements for allegedly committing the offenses while out on bail and intentional discharge of a firearm, according to court records.
Brown did not enter a plea.
The victim, a 34-year-old Sacramento man, called police around 8:20 a.m. Thursday and said he had just been shot in the area of Somersville Road and Delta Fair Boulevard, Antioch police said.
When officers arrived, the victim and his passenger told police that they had been stopped at a red light on Somersville Road at Delta Fair Boulevard when a white, four-door sedan pulled up behind them, police said.
When the light turned green, the white car went around them on the left, and then both vehicles turned right onto Delta Fair Boulevard.
As they were making the turn, the driver of the white car fired a shot at the victim, striking the victim in the back.
The white car then sped away west on Delta Fair Boulevard, police said.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was last reported to be in critical but stable condition, police said.
Investigators reviewed footage from surveillance cameras near the scene and identified the gunman's car, which had been caught on several cameras, police said.
On Friday, a patrol officer spotted the car and pulled it over near the scene of the shooting. The officer contacted Brown and found a loaded gun in his car, police said.
During a subsequent search of Brown's home, police also allegedly found a rifle, ammunition and marijuana packaged for sale, police said.
According to police, Brown admitted to the shooting and was arrested and booked into county jail.
He had been free on $30,000 bail in connection with assault charges stemming from a June 30, 2008, incident.
Details about that case were not immediately available, but according to court records, Brown and a co-defendant were charged with assault causing great bodily injury and with making criminal threats.
That case was scheduled to go to trial in October.
During the arraignment in Martinez Wednesday, Judge Harlan Grossman noted that Brown had posted bail in the previous case and revoked it.
"You're not going anywhere," Grossman told Brown.
Brown is scheduled to return to court Oct. 7 in Pittsburg to enter a plea to the new charges.
