A's Free Agent Jon Lester Picks Cubs Over Giants, Red Sox
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The bidding war over the services of former A's starter Jon Lester wrapped up overnight with with the Ace picking the rebuilding Cubs over a collection of other suitors including the last two world champions.
ESPN Chicago reports that Lester struck a 6-year $155 million deal with the Cubs that could extend to a seventh year with a vesting option. The lefty, who was the losing pitcher for the A's in their Wild Card game that ended last season, confirmed that he was joining the Cubs via his Twitter account.
Lester Joined the A's via trade last offseason after winning two championships in Boston to begin his career. Lester went 6-4 in Oakland with a 2.35 ERA, but surrendered six runs in the elimination game against the Kansas City Royals.
The 4-time All-Star spent most of nine seasons in Boston, where he is a career 110-63 pitcher who picked up six postseason wins. He expressed his condolences to Sox fans who expressed disappointment that he didn't decide to return.
The Giants were among the other teams reported to make a serious run at signing Lester. The team has been considering options to rebuild the rotation behind ace Madison Bumgarner.
Lester becomes the third high-profile target the Giants have lost out on since winning the title. They failed to re-sign 3rd baseman Pablo Sandoval and were runners up in the race for Cuban power hitter Yasmany Tomas.
