Arrest Made In 1998 San Francisco Cold Case Murder
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man was arrested last weekend in connection with a 1998 cold case murder in San Francisco, police said Wednesday.
Lisa Valdez, 36, was found fatally stabbed in her apartment in the city's Diamond Heights neighborhood on May 20, 1998, according to police.
Anthony Quinn Hughes, now 52, was detained early Saturday near the intersection of Turk and Leavenworth streets by plainclothes officers from the department's Tenderloin Station, police homicide Inspector Pam Hofsass said.
He was brought to the San Francisco Hall of Justice where he was interviewed and later arrested in connection with Valdez's murder, police said.
Hofsass said, "DNA played a great part of the investigation but was not the only evidence."
She declined to provide more information about the case as to not compromise an ongoing investigation.
Hughes has been charged with murder and attempted rape. He remains in custody and has not yet been arraigned.
The hearing has been scheduled for next Monday for arraignment and receipt of a mental competency evaluation, district attorney's spokesman Seth Steward said.
