Armed Man Shot Dead By San Jose Police Was Wanted For Prior Homicide
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A man shot and killed by police officers in San Jose on Sunday was a suspect in a homicide that happened three days before, a police spokesman said Monday.
The man, whose name has not been released, was wanted in connection with a homicide on Thursday and was fatally shot by officers Sunday at a strip mall in the 3100 block of Senter Road, police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said.
Around 10:10 p.m. Sunday, officers were conducting a follow-up investigation on last week's homicide and located the suspect in a strip mall on Senter Road near Capitol Expressway, Garcia said.
Homicide detectives obtained information on the suspect and attained a felony arrest warrant for him, according to Garcia.
The officers attempted to take the suspect into custody but he did not comply with their demands, the sergeant said.
The suspect took out a handgun, which prompted two officers to fire multiple shots at him, Garcia said.
The suspect was struck by the gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene, Garcia said.
No other injuries were reported.
The names of the involved officers have also not been released.
Investigators at the Senter Road shooting recovered the suspect's handgun, which will undergo forensics testing to determine if it was the weapon used in Thursday's homicide, Garcia said.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 1800 block of Lundy Avenue in the city's Berryessa neighborhood, Garcia said.
Arriving officers found a man inside suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sergeant said.
The victim was identified as 38-year-old San Jose resident Christopher Maxwell Wrenn, Garcia said.
Thursday's shooting was the 19th homicide in the city this year, Garcia said.
Sunday's incident was the department's seventh officer-involved shooting in 2015 and the third one in a week, police said.
The officer-involved shooting will be reviewed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and San Jose police internal affairs unit.
On Aug. 9, Edrian Rivera, 22, was shot and killed by two officers in the area of San Antonio Avenue and Packing Place, according to police.
On Aug. 10, Aaron James Phillips, 30, who was reportedly intoxicated and armed at a home on San Marcos Drive, was shot at by officers. Following a standoff, Phillips was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
