Archeologists Begin Digging Transbay Terminal
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS)- Digging gets underway this Monday in the eight-year, $4 billion project to build a new Transbay Terminal in San Francisco. And it's the archeologists who get the first crack breaking ground.
Scientists will excavate the current Transbay parking lot to make sure there are no significant historic or prehistoric deposits underneath before major construction begins. The exploration work is expected to proceed through early August.
The two-phase Transbay Transit Center Project broke ground in December on a temporary terminal located between Beale and Main and Howard and Folsom streets that is scheduled to open on August 7th.
The new regional Transbay Center is supposed to be complete in 2018 and, when finished, will house nine Bay Area transportation systems and act as a terminal for the high-speed rail line that will link the region to the rest of the state.
