Apple CEO Tim Cook Introduces 2 New, Larger iPhones, Smart Watch At Cupertino Flint Center Event
CUPERTINO (CBS SF) -- Apple's chief executive officer took the stage at the company's product launch event in Cupertino Tuesday to announce two new versions of the iPhone and the much-anticipated Apple Watch.
Cook showed off the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus during the event at the Flint Center on the De Anza College campus. Both the new iPhones are larger than the current iPhone 5.
The iPhone 6 measures 4.7 inches across the screen and the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5 inches. Both phones are also thinner than the iPhone 5.
Also at the event, Apple (AAPL) unveiled its version of a smartwatch at the event, which is was streaming live on its website. Users of the stream reported it was down as of 10:00 a.m.
Cook prefaced the introduction of the watch by saying he had, "one more thing." The phrase is what late CEO Steve Jobs used when he would introduce high-anticipated new Apple products.
The Apple Watch is the company's first major entry in a new product category since the iPad's debut in 2010. The smart watch comes in three different versions with users able to customize the watch faces and swap out different colored straps.
Apple also unveiled a new digital payment system built into the iPhones called Apple Pay, which will use touch ID for security.
Apple was expected to showcase the new iPhones and watch next door to the Flint Center in a building specially constructed for the event.
Powering the new iPhones is Apple's updated operating system iOS 8, also introduced Tuesday. The new software will allow users to do more within apps without jumping from one app to another app. One example: if a user gets a text message while composing an email, the user will be able to pull down the text and reply without leaving the email app.
