Apple Announces Record 1st Day Pre-Orders For New iPhone
CUPERTINO (CBS/AP) – First-day pre-orders of Apple's iPhone 4S have topped 1 million, breaking the record set by last year's model.
The Cupertino-based company and various phone carriers started taking orders for the new phone last Friday. It will be available for purchase at United States Apple retail stores starting on October 14.
First-day orders for the iPhone 4 were 600,000 when it launched last year. It was then sold in the U.S. only by AT&T. The iPhone 4S will be sold by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel.
The base model for the iPhone 4S costs $200 with a two-year contract. It has a faster processor and an improved camera compared to last year's model.
The iPhone 4S is the first major product launch for Apple since Tim Cook took over for Steve Jobs as chief executive officer.
