Antioch, Police Union Reach Tentative Agreement
ANTIOCH (KCBS) - The president of the Antioch Police Officers Association, Sgt. Tom Fuhrmann, says his union has worked out a tentative agreement with the city that would last through the end of the year. If approved, it also would rescind layoff notices for six officers.
KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:
"It's almost a million dollars savings to the city," he said. "We're doing our part and doing what we can to help the city move forward to get through this financial crisis."
City leaders have to cut personnel costs by more than one million dollars by June. Rollie Katz of Public Employees Union Local 1, which represents about 50 city employees, says police are not sacrificing as nearly as much as his union members.
"The city, on the other hand, is asking us to extend our contract at least to 2013 and continue the ten percent pay cut," Katz said.
Katz says after January 2012, police are likely to receive scheduled pay increases and eliminate their three-percent retirement contribution. The city council is set to vote on the tentative agreement Tuesday night.
