Antioch Man Arrested After Doing 100, Ramming Cop During Chase
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) - An Antioch man was arrested after striking a police officer with his vehicle and then leading officers on a high-speed chase on state Highway 4 through Contra Costa County on Wednesday evening, police said.
Antioch police, in partnership with members of the Richmond Police Department, the California Department of Corrections, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the Contra Costa County District Attorney Investigators conducted a proactive enforcement detail to target high crime areas of Antioch.
At about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, officers initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of G and Texas streets, near Marsh Elementary School, police said.
During the traffic stop, the suspect vehicle struck a police officer as the driver attempted to flee from officers. The officer was not injured, police said.
The suspect then led officers on a high-speed pursuit through the cities of Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point, and Concord for over an hour, police said.
Pittsburg police and the California Highway Patrol were also involved in the pursuit.
According to police, the suspect fled from officers at speeds of up to 100 mph.
Spike strips were laid out in the roadway several times during the pursuit. The spike strips flattened some, but not all of the tires of the suspect vehicle, police said.
The pursuit ended back in Antioch near the intersection of G Street and Longview Road, as the suspect vehicle circled the neighborhood, driving on its rims, according to police.
The suspect vehicle was disabled in the 2900 block of Longview Road and the driver, later identified as a 36-year-old Antioch man, attempted to flee the scene on foot, officers said.
The suspect was apprehended a short distance away from the vehicle by officers and was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony evasion, police said.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. The incident remains under investigation, police said.
