Anti-Trump Protests Erupt From Oakland, San Francisco To New York, D.C.
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Chanting "**** Trump," thousands of anti-Trump protesters took to the streets of Oakland and other cities across the country on Wednesday evening, continuing to air their disapproval of a Donald Trump presidency the day after Election Day.
Thousands of protesters flooded into the streets of Oakland, as well as New York City, San Francisco, D.C., Philadelphia, and Chicago. More demonstrations took place in Seattle and Portland.
Some cities, including San Francisco, held vigils Wednesday night. A candlelit vigil took place in San Francisco's Castro District -- a neighborhood famous for championing gay rights.
Many of the protesters are concerned that Trump will carry out his 100-day plan, which consists of removing environmental regulations, deporting undocumented immigrants and closing the U.S. borders to refugees.
As of about 7 p.m. PST, Oakland police estimated there were 7,000 protesters in the streets and still more coming off BART trains into downtown Oakland.
As of 9 p.m. PST, there were fires burning in the streets, fireworks going off and a heavy police presence in Oakland.
In San Francisco, thousands of protesters marched down Market Street, stopping for a vigil in the Castro District, through the
Demonstrations are taking place across the heavily Democrat Bay Area, including in San Jose and Berkeley.
Earlier in the day, thousands of Berkeley students held walk-outs in protest of the President-Elect.
Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker urged the public -- via a viral Facebook post and multiple tweets -- to walk-out, protest and elect progressive Democrats. Moore outlined a plan forward, remarking that while Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, the electoral votes brought in Trump.
In New York City, protesters gathered in Union Square and around Trump Tower. New York City police reported 16 arrests as of 6:30 p.m. EST.
