Animal Update: Thanksgiving and Pets
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It's Thanksgiving week, which means the San Francisco SPCA has some advice for keeping pets healthy and safe during the holiday.
"Most dos and don'ts regarding Thanksgiving are about food," summed up Dr. Jack Aldridge, Director of Veterinary Services at the SF SPCA. "We all know how much our pets love to eat but it's more loving not to share your Thanksgiving meal with them. Now, we may think a small piece of turkey skin here and some stuffing there won't hurt our pets, but it's really easy to overdo it."
"So, he continued, "you should keep a supply of healthy pet treats on hand at Thanksgiving. Give these to your cat or dog instead of human food."
KCBS' Jeff Bell Reports:
Too much fatty food, he warned, can make your pet sick.
"Absolutely," stressed Aldridge.
"By the way," he also advised, "before Thanksgiving make sure you know how your vet is handling emergencies during the holiday, and if there's a 24-hour emergency clinic near where you live."
