Andronico's Closing Another Berkeley Store
BERKELEY (KCBS)— The 82-year-old Andronico's supermarket chain is preparing to close another Berkeley store. The announcement was made on Friday that the Andronico's on Telegraph Avenue will shut its doors for good. It's unclear when exactly that day will be.
Mike Humprhies, a 30-year-customer, claimed he shops there all the time and is "dismayed" at its closing.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
The new owners, who bought the seven-store chain after a bankruptcy in August, closed Berkeley's University Avenue store in October.
Humphries said he's likely to shop at the two remaining Berkeley Andronico's on Shattuck or Solano Avenues.
"I think when it went out of family ownership, things changed," Humphries said.
Ray Rabill, another longtime and nostalgic customer said when he heard the news Saturday morning that he had to come by to see the store one last time.
"I went to school around here and this is where I used to do all my shopping. I'd have my dinners here," Rabill said followed by his uncertain laughter.
He called the closure "very sad" and that he liked the store for its friendly, helpful employees as well as its delicatessen.
Until it closes, the store will have a 20 to 40 percent off everything sale.
Andronico's supermarkets still exist in San Francisco, San Anselmo and Los Altos.
