Amtrak Train Kills Pedestrian In San Leandro
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - An Amtrak train heading toward Sacramento hit and killed a pedestrian Thursday morning in San Leandro, a San Leandro police lieutenant said.
Capitol Corridor train No. 528, which operates between San Jose and Sacramento, struck a person around 10:15 a.m. west of Davis Street in San Leandro, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.
San Leandro police Lt. Jeff Tudor said the pedestrian died as a result. Railroad police are taking over the investigation because the crash was on the tracks, not a city street, he said.
There were no injuries to the 35 passengers on board or to any crew members, Graham said.
On-schedule service resumed before 2 p.m.
The pedestrian was on the tracks but not on the Davis Street marked crossing, Graham said.
In a separate incident at 10:30 a.m., San Joaquin train No. 701 from Bakersfield to Sacramento struck a pedestrian west of the city of Merced.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the death was intentional.
