Amid Criticism, Oakland Mayor Schaaf Says Raiders Deserve Clarity From City Over Stadium Plans
OAKLAND (KCBS) — Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is vowing to give the Raiders more "clarity" on what steps the city is prepared to take to keep the team from moving following criticism from the NFL commissioner that her city does not have a firm stadium plan.
Schaaf said she shares the frustration of the Raiders and the NFL over the stadium issue, but says while Oakland is willing to help, the city has no plans to offer taxpayer dollars to build professional sports venues.
"The Raiders do deserve more clarity from the city of Oakland about what we are willing to do," said Schaaf. "We've been clear that we're not willing to put city money into stadium construction.
"We've got to come up with a plan that works in the complex environment that Oakland has and also makes sense with our taxpayers as well as for the teams. That's what we're committed to doing and we have a new administrative team in place that I'm confident will get that job done."
Schaaf says she's looking forward to June 21st, which is the deadline for the Coliseum City developers to offer their plan.
The Raiders and San Diego Chargers have announced that while they both pursue new venues in their home cities, they are also partnering on a proposal to share a new stadium in the city of Carson.
