(CBS SF) -- In a televised speech on Wednesday, President Obama announced a comprehensive strategy to defeat ISIS that includes strengthening the U.S. military role with airstrikes in Syria, but no American combat troops on the ground.
"Our objective is clear: we will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism strategy," Obama said.

His speech comes less than two weeks after he came under intense criticism for saying "we don't have a strategy yet," while the nation learned about the horrific beheadings of two American journalists by ISIS militants.
