Amber Alert Search Underway After Oakland Toddler Abduction
OAKLAND (KCBS/KPIX 5) - FBI agents and Oakland police officers with search dogs were going door-to-door in an East Oakland neighborhood Wednesday looking for a 21-month-old girl who disappeared from an SUV parked outside a liquor store.
Daphne Viola Webb was abducted from a vheicle parked in front of Gazzali's Supermarket at 7838 International Blvd., according to the California Highway Patrol, which issued an Amber Alert for Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties shortly after the girl was reported missing around 11 a.m.
"We take this very seriously and we're devoting a lot of resources to it," Oakland police officer Johnna Watson said.
The girl's father entered the store by himself to buy a drink, leaving his daughter in the car with an adult family member who is mentally disabled. But when he returned to the car, the girl was gone, police said.
Witnesses said the toddler was taken by an unidentified black or Hispanic woman woman between 30 and 40 years old, who had straight, long black hair and was wearing a light-colored shirt and blue jeans.
The suspect was seen walking away from the store carrying the young girl, police said.
The child is described as black, about 2 feet tall and weighing 30 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing orange pajamas with pink hearts.
Officers were conducting a house-to-house search in an area of 78th Avenue between International Boulevard and Locust Street, which was closed to traffic.
Part of the search was also focused on the area around Doolittle Drive near the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline park where the family would sometimes visit, according to authorities.
Authorities asked anyone with information about the abduction to call Oakland Police at (510) 238-3641.
