Alameda Webster Street Tube Reopens Following Wrong-Way Crash
ALAMEDA (BCN) - A wrong-way collision at the Webster Street Tube in Alameda seriously injured one person and closed the tunnel for more than seven hours Tuesday morning.
Investigators said a silver Chevy Traverse SUV was speeding out of the Webster Tube just before midnight when a California Highway Patrol officer pulled it over. The SUV then did a U-turn and fled, driving the wrong way just outside the tunnel.
The SUV hit a black Toyota Corolla coming out of the tunnel head-on, and caused a second car to crash, according to the CHP.
The driver of the Corolla suffered major injuries, according to the Alameda Police Dept. An earlier report from Caltrans erroneously indicated the driver had been killed.
The driver of the second car suffered moderate injuries.
There were five people in the SUV, investigators said. The driver and one passenger fled the scene on foot and were captured shortly after. The driver was arrested and is facing DUI, vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run charges. The passenger was detained and there was no word on any other charges.
