Alameda Police, Fire Crews Rescue Swimmers In Distress

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- Alameda police and fire crews rescued two swimmers in distress Monday afternoon, city officials said.

Emergency personnel responded to swimmers in the water off of Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, near Shoreline Drive and Grand Street, at around 1 p.m., according to city officials.

A female swimmer was able to make it to shore safely on her own while rescue swimmers assisted a male swimmer who was about 200 yards off the coast.

Both swimmers were taken to Alameda Hospital, city officials said.

Alameda and U.S. Coast Guard rescue boats also responded but were not needed.

Alameda secured the rescue boat and established its rescue swimmer program as part of an effort to shore up its water rescue capabilities after the drowning death of a suicidal man last May.
