Aftershocks Rattle Napa Following 4.1 Earthquake Thursday
YOUNTVILLE (CBS SF) -- A moderate earthquake jolted the Bay Area followed by a few minor aftershocks overnight.
The 4.1 magnitude quake struck just before 8 p.m. and was centered six miles northeast of Yountville and nine miles north of Napa.
As of late Thursday night, there were some reports of broken glasses and bottles at restaurants, but there were no reports of serious damage or injuries. There were also a couple of aftershocks:
1.9 -- Friday, 5:55 a.m.
1.9 -- Friday, 3:21 a.m.
1.6 -- Thursday, 10:39 a.m.
"It was a jolt," said Yountville resident Jim Sanderson. "The other one was kind of a rolling one. But this was a jolt and it lasted for about five seconds So that wasn't bad."
Sanderson is referring to last year's quake that caused significant damage in the Wine Country, which geologists say could be linked to Thursday night's quake.
USGS geophysicist Brad Aagaard told KPIX 5 Thursday's quake is near a region that may have had a stress increase or decrease from last year's quake, but said more information is needed.
Aagaard said Thursday night's quake was larger than any of the aftershocks that shook the area last summer.
The USGS heard from 2,000 people from across the Bay Area who felt the quake. And plenty of people chimed in over social media.
