Anti-Fur Activists Stage Protest Outside SF Clothing Stores
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Hordes of shoppers descended upon Union Square on Friday with some met by animal rights activists, who gathered for "Fur Free Friday."
About a dozen cops gathered outside the clothing store Bebe on Grant Avenue, met peacefully by animal rights activists, including Lindsay Rajt with PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
"PETA has shown Bebe executives footage of animals being beaten to death, electrocuted and even skinned alive in some cases for their fur," Rajt said.
Priya Sawhani said that oftentimes, shoppers don't realize that the trim on a jacket is made from fur of one sort or another and likely from China.
"So I can go inside Bebe and think I'm being a really critical consumer by not buying fur, but I'm still putting money in their bank account," she said.
PETA and In Defense of Animals set up Friday's protest at not only Bebe, but Macy's in San Francisco, as well.
A store employee at Bebe had no comment.
In Defense of Animals said "Fur Free Friday" has become one of the largest demonstrations of the year with events scheduled around the globe.
