Climate Activists Protest at Wells Fargo Headquarters in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Dozens of protesters gathered in San Francisco Friday to demand that Wells Fargo take responsibility for what they say is its role in the climate crisis.
The activists rallied outside of Wells Fargo headquarters in downtown San Francisco Friday morning, where they painted a giant mural on the street calling to protect future generations.
The activists pointed out Wells Fargo's role in the Line 3 pipeline project. Friday afternoon, the protesters will march to the offices of global investment company BlackRock.
CBS SF received a statement from Wells Fargo Friday afternoon. While the statement did not address the concerns expressed by protesters about the Line 3 pipeline pipeline project, it did say that last month the company "announced a major step in its efforts to support the transition to allow-carbon economy by setting a goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions — including its financed emissions — by 2050."
The statement went on to outline a number of ways that Wells Fargo claims it will meet the goals, including measuring and disclosing financed emissions for select carbon intensive portfolios, setting interim emission reduction targets and deploying more capital to finance climate innovation.
"Climate change is one of the most urgent environmental and social issues of our time, and Wells Fargo is committed to aligning our activities to support the goals of the Paris Agreement and to helping transition to a net zero carbon economy," the statement concluded.
