AC Transit Lays Groundwork For Possible Regular Fare Hikes
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- AC Transit is considering a fare increase this summer, which may be part of a strategy to raise fares on a regular basis.
KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:
This summer's increase may only be a dime, but there is a proposal on the table to regularly raise fares so that the transit district knows how much money it has to deal with, and passengers will know what to expect.
The transit service has been cutting service and raising fares over the past year, with the base charge now $2.
"This will push me onto BART, and make the ferry cheaper, so I'll probably travel those more when I come into San Francisco for work every day," said one man.
The district also wants to raise the price of the youth bus pass, which isn't sitting well with some board members who say students use AC to go to and from school.
