Novato High School Student Killed, Another Injured In Shooting
NOVATO (CBS) -- Three suspects remain at large after a shooting near Novato that killed a Novato High School student and injured another Wednesday evening.
Novato High School will be closed on Thursday, according to the school's principal Matt Baldwin and superintendent Jim Hogeboom.
"To ensure the safety of students and staff, and due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation, we are closing Novato High School on Thursday," the administrators wrote in a letter to parents and guardians Wednesday night.
Around 5:30 p.m.Wednesday deputies received a report from a victim who had been stabbed and shot near the end of Fairway Drive, off of Ignacio Boulevard.
Novato police responded and found the victim, who was transported to a hospital. They also determined the crime likely took place in an open space area on a nearby hillside, in the Marin County Sheriff's office's jurisdiction.
During a search of the area, officers discovered a second victim apparently suffering from gunshot wounds on the hillside near the initial crime scene. That victim was declared dead at the scene, according to sheriff's Lt. Doug Pittman.
The other victim remains in serious condition.
The suspects were described as three Hispanic males, based on information from the first victim, according to Pittman.
A shelter in place order was issued for Novato residents in the vicinity of Fairway and St. Andrews drives around 6 p.m. That order was lifted around 9:10 p.m.
Deputies said there is no current threat to nearby residents, and that investigators will remain on the scene overnight to process evidence.
Police have said that they plan to continue searching the area Thursday with assistance from canines with Marin County Search and Rescue.
