8-Year Old San Jose Boy Rides Pocket Bike Into Traffic, Killed
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- An 8-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a truck while riding a "pocket bike" in San Jose on Friday evening has been identified as Matthew Dinh, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.
Around 7:45 p.m. Friday, police responded to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian in the 800 block of Farm Drive.
Police said Dinh, a San Jose resident, had been riding a small, electric-powered "pocket bike" when he went into the road and was fatally struck by a 2008 Chevrolet truck.
Dinh was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:31 p.m., police said.
Police said Dinh was not wearing a helmet when the collision occurred.
The driver of the truck stayed at the scene after the accident and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
Police said there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.
Dinh was a student at Canoas Elementary School. Officials at San Jose Unified School District said they were still waiting to hear from the family about the scheduling of a memorial service or funeral.
