7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Vanuatu
PORT VILA, Vanuatu (CBS SF) -- A strong earthquake shook the Oceanian island nation of Vanuatu Tuesday afternoon.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured magnitude 7.3 and struck at a depth of 117 kilometers at 2:53 p.m Tuesday PT.
The quake was centered under the ocean 339 kilometers (211 miles) north of the capital Port Vila.
No injuries or damage were immediately reported, but an earthquake this size can cause considerable damage in substantial buildings with partial collapse and even shift structures off foundations.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami threat from this earthquake.
