6 Sharks Receive Winter Olympics Invitations
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Invitations for the 2014 Winter Olympics have now been extended to six San Jose Sharks players, the team announced Tuesday.
Topping the list was forward Joe Pavelski, who was invited this week to try out for the U.S. men's hockey team. Pavelski was a member of the 2010 Team USA that captured the silver medal.
His teammates, defensemen Dan Boyle and Marc-Edouard Vlasic along with forwards Logan Couture and Joe Thornton received invites from Team Canada.
Thornton represented Canada at the previous two Olympic Winter Olympics (2006 and 2010), capturing the gold medal in 2010. Boyle was also a member of the 2010 gold-medal winning squad.
Team Finland extended an invitation Tuesday to Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi. Finland's men's team has medaled in three out of the last four Olympics since NHL players began their participation in the games.
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games are set for Feb. 7-23, 2014, in Sochi, Russia.
