$5 Million Bay Bridge Celebration On Hold, May Be Canceled
OAKLAND (CBS / AP) -- Now that the opening of the new Bay Bridge has been delayed for several months, a $5.6 million celebration planned in honor of the span is also in limbo, and it may not happen at all.
More than 100,000 people were expected to walk, run and bicycle across the new bridge over Labor Day weekend.
But after officials announced Monday that it will take until at least December to repair cracks in seismic safety bolts, the Bay Area Toll Authority said the fate of the free celebration is up in the air.
Toll authority spokesman Randy Rentschler said "it's not certain" that there will be any public access to the bridge before it opens.
The authority's board could consider alternative plans for a public event at a meeting Wednesday.
