5 Hurt In 'Domino Effect' Pileup On I-80 In Fairfield
FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) - A five-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 80 in Fairfield Monday morning injured five people—one critically—and closed three lanes during the commute hour.
The crash, which blocked the No. 1, 2 and 3 lanes, happened around 7:15 a.m. just east of Waterman Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A Sig-alert was issued at 7:37 a.m. and was lifted at 9:13 a.m. when all three lanes were back open.
All five cars involved in the crash were traveling in the No. 3 lane. Four cars stopped because of slowed traffic, but the fifth vehicle did not, and crashed into the car ahead of it, pushing the other vehicles into each other in a "domino effect," CHP Sgt, Phil Grant said.
Four vehicles sustained major front-end damage, according to the CHP.
Five people were transported to hospitals, including one who suffered critical injuries and was flown to John Muir Medical Center, Grant said.
