Santa Monica Shooter Had 1300 Rounds of Ammunition; 5 Dead, 5 Wounded
SANTA MONICA (CBS/AP) -- Santa Monica's police chief says the gunman who killed four people in a chaotic rampage planned the attack and had 1,300 rounds of ammunition.
Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks says the gunman who was killed by police had a rifle, a duffel bag full of ammunition magazines and extra weaponry.
She says the suspect had a run-in with police seven years ago, but she couldn't comment further because he was a juvenile at the time.
She spoke near a display of weapons and ammo recovered from Santa Monica College where the killings ended when police fatally shot the gunman.
Los Angeles County coroners have identified one of the people gunned down at Santa Monica College.
Investigator Joyce Kato says 68-year-old Carlos Navarro Franco of west Los Angeles was killed in Friday's shootings.
Franco was the driver of a red Ford Explorer that the gunman sprayed with bullets, killing him and wounding his passenger, who was in critical condition after undergoing surgery at a UCLA hospital.
The violence lasted about 20 minutes and started about a mile away from campus, where the gunman is believed to have killed his father, brother and another person in a house. That house burned down, and investigators are determining whether that was arson.
Investigators have released a man who had been detained as a "person of interest."
Sgt. Richard Lewis, a Santa Monica police spokesman, said at a news conference Friday night that the man was questioned and released, and he is not a suspect.
Police believe the killings Friday began as a domestic violence incident.
Officials say the gunman began the rampage by killing his father and brother. They were found in a burning house about a mile from the Santa Monica College campus where the gunman was killed.
Police say the gunman went on to kill two more people, including Franco, and injured several others before officers fatally shot him in the college library.
Police said earlier that seven people were killed, including the gunman. But they corrected that to a total of five people late Friday.
