4th Student Suspended From SJSU Amid Hate Crime Allegations
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - A fourth student was suspended Friday from San Jose State University in the wake of alleged hate crimes by white students against a black student at a residence hall, a university spokeswoman said.
The student was suspended Friday along with three others who were suspended Thursday and charged with misdemeanor hate crime and battery against the student at the Campus Village residential complex, SJSU spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said.
On Thursday, the university announced that the three 18-year-old freshman students, Logan Beaschler of Bakersfield, Joseph Bomgardner of Clovis and Colin Warren of Woodacre, were suspended from campus after the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office filed the charges.
The fourth student also was to be charged in the case, but cannot be named or described because he was a juvenile at the time of the alleged incidents, Harris said.
The three 18-year-olds, who are white, are accused of placing a bike lock around the neck of the black freshman student, calling him the racial name "three-fifths" and hanging a Confederate flag in the eight-person student campus housing suite they shared between August and mid-October, prosecutors said.
The black student's roommates also wrote an anti-black slur on a white board, placed Nazi symbols and photographs of Adolf Hitler in the suite, barricaded him in his room and injured him while trying to put the lock on him a second time, according to the district attorney's office.
University president Mohammad Qayoumi, who denounced the incidents in a prepared statement on Thursday, is expected to issue another statement later today, Harris said.
