49ers' WR Crabtree Questioned Over Alleged Sexual Assault
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) -- The San Francisco Police Department said Friday night they are investigating 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree in an alleged sexual assault earlier this week.
According to a statement from the department, the alleged assault occurred in a San Francisco hotel room early Sunday morning, hours after the team defeated the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Police said Crabtree was interviewed with his lawyer present and is cooperating with the investigation. He has not been detained or arrested in the case. Crabtree has agreed to make himself available to investigators in the future, police said.
The incident is being investigated by the department's Special Victims Unit and will be turned over to the district attorney's office once the investigation is complete. No further details were released by police.
Crabtree traveled with the team to Atlanta Friday night, ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Falcons. He practiced with the team on Friday, but arrived late for a team bus headed to Mineta San Jose International Airport. Crabtree was able to board the bus and make the charter flight.
49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Friday night, "We are aware of the allegation against Michael and understand that he has fully cooperated with authorities. The 49ers take such matters very seriously. We will have no further comment at this time as the legal process is ongoing. Additional requests for comment should be directed to Michael's attorney."
Crabtree was selected by the 49ers in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft from Texas Tech University.
During the regular season, Crabtree had 1,105 yards receiving, the most by a 49ers wide receiver since Terrell Owens in 2002. In last week's game, Crabtree caught nine passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns.
