49ers Reportedly Agree To Trade Alex Smith To Kansas City
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Alex Smith's eight-year run with the team that drafted him as the first overall pick in 2005 appears to be over after multiple reports of a trade between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports first reported on Twitter the 49ers have a deal in place to send Smith to Kansas City for multiple draft picks. The trade cannot become official until the league's trade period begins on March 12.
Comcast Sports Bay Area quoted an unnamed source as saying any report of a completed trade is "premature."
ESPN reported the 49ers would receive Kansas City's 2nd round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft (No. 34 overall) and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2014.
Smith was scheduled to make $8.5 million next season.
Smith suffered a concussion on Nov. 11. in a game against the St. Louis Rams and was replaced by Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick's passing accuracy and running ability led head coach Jim Harbaugh to keep him as the starter. Smith, who took his demotion with grace and professionalism, continued to mentor his former backup as Kaepernick led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
