49ers Make Trades Involving Smith, Boldin Official
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) - The San Francisco 49ers made their trade of quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs official on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after the two sides agreed to it. Officials also confirmed Monday's reported deal to add receiver Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers will receive the Chiefs' second-round pick, 34th overall, and a conditional choice in next year's draft in exchange for Smith, the former number 1 overall pick, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms were not disclosed.
Smith must still pass a physical for the trade to be completed.
The 28-year-old Smith struggled much of his career in San Francisco, but blossomed the past couple seasons under new coach Jim Harbaugh and is considered an upgrade for Kansas City.
The Chiefs are expected to release incumbent quarterback Matt Cassel.
The deal for Boldin is also pending a physical. Boldin was a big key in Baltimore's 34-31 Super Bowl victory against the 49ers. He made six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown and also had five receptions for 60 yards and two TDs in a victory over New England in the AFC title game.
