The San Francisco 49ers rewarded All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey with a contract extension after he won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award in his first full season with the team.

The team said in a statement that the two-year extension would keep McCaffrey with the 49ers through the 2027 season. Financial terms were not disclosed but a person familiar with the deal said it's worth $19 million per year over two years. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal hadn't been announced by the team. Pro Football Talk first reported the new contract.

McCaffrey was on hand Tuesday at the start of San Francisco's mandatory minicamp after skipping the voluntary practices the previous two weeks.

McCaffrey has helped transform San Francisco's offense since being acquired in a trade from Carolina midway through the 2022 season.

"Two years ago, we were ecstatic to welcome Christian McCaffrey to the 49ers," said 49ers general manager John Lynch in a prepared statement. "Since his arrival, he's been everything we thought he would be and more. His versatile skillset has been a seamless fit within our offense. His professionalism and work ethic are as exemplary as I've seen since I've been associated with the NFL. We look forward to working with Christian for many years to come."

In 27 games for the Niners, McCaffrey has rushed for 2,205 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 119 passes for 1,028 yards and 11 scores.

He led the NFL last season with 2,023 yards from scrimmage and was tied for the league lead with 21 touchdowns.

Since entering the NFL in 2017, McCaffrey ranks first in receptions (509), receiving yards (4,320) and yards from scrimmage (10,505), second in receiving touchdowns (29) and fourth in rushing touchdowns (52) among NFL running backs. He has recorded 6,185 rushing yards, sixth-most in the NFL during that span. He has earned AP All-Pro honors three times (First-Team, 2019 & 2023; Second-Team, 2018) and been named to the Pro Bowl on three occasions (2020, 2023-24).

A native of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, McCaffrey starred at Stanford University, setting an NCAA record with 3,864 all-purpose yards.

McCaffrey, who turns 28 on Friday, will now be under contract through the 2027 season.
