3-Year-Old Trick-Or-Treater, 2 Others Shot In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) -- A 3-year-old girl remained hospitalized Monday with life-threatening injuries after she and her grandfather were caught in a shooting in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood while heading home from trick-or-treating.
SFPD Officer Albie Esparza said the Sunday night attack appeared to be gang-related. He added that the child and her grandfather were the unintended victims of the gunfire, which also critically injured a 20-year-old man.
The trio were all shot near the intersection of 25th and Connecticut streets about 10 p.m.
Police said the 52-year old grandfather was hurt as he tried to shield the girl with his body. The toddler was hit multiple times, but her grandfather suffered only a single gunshot wound that was not considered life-threatening.
"For a small child like that, any injury could be serious," SFPD Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.
The child's mother found the two and rushed them to a local hospital, where both were listed in stable condition on Monday afternoon.
The suspect was described by police as a black man between the ages of 18 and 25 wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
Police said the investigation was ongoing and asked that anyone with information about the shooting call the SFPD's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444.
Investigators added that information could also be texted in using Text-A-Tip by sending tips to TEXT411 with "SFPD" in the message.
