3 East Bay Overpasses Structurally Deficient, New Report Says
HAYWARD (KCBS) -- Three heavily traveled East Bay overpasses are on a list of structurally deficient bridges released by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.
The stretch of I-680 passing over Monument Boulevard in Contra Costa County was built in 1998. The I-880 overpass above Whipple Road in Alameda County was built in 1956. And, the I-880 overpass above the San Leandro Creek built in 1951 in Alameda County also made the list.
"I've lived all my life in the Bay Area, and I drive these roads every day," one driver said after hearing the news. He wonders where his taxes are going.
"Sometimes we invest in other countries, but sometimes it's time to invest a little bit in our structures," he said.
The three bridges see more than 200,000 daily crossings each.
"I'm lucky we don't live in a third world country, but man, sometimes it feels like it," another driver said.
Structurally deficient means that one or more key structural elements are in poor condition, or worse.
