3 Displaced By Alameda House Fire

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- At least three residents were displaced by a fire that badly damaged their home in Alameda Thursday afternoon, an Alameda fire captain said.

The fire was reported at a two-story home in the 1300 block of Eighth Street at 12:37 p.m., fire Capt. James Colburn said.

Crews arrived to find thick smoke and flames coming from the home's front door, Colburn said.

The residents were able to get out safely before firefighters arrived, he said.

However, a dog and cat were left in the home. After crews extinguished the blaze, they searched the home and found that both pets had perished, Colburn said.

Most of the house sustained major damage, and the residents will be unable to return, Colburn said.

The fire did not affect any neighboring homes.

The street was briefly shut down while crews responded to the blaze. The cause remains under investigation.
