3 Bay Area Cities Add More Than 100,000 Jobs In The Last Year As Boom Continues
SAN JOSE (KCBS)— The Bay Area job boom is showing no signs of let up with the Bay Area's three biggest cities alone adding more than 100,000 jobs over the last 12 months.
The unemployment rate stands at 3.7 percent in San Francisco, 4.5 percent in San Jose and 5.1 percent in Oakland. There are now 26,000 more people working in San Francisco than there were during the dot-com boom back in the late '90s-early 2000s.
"We're seeing a steady upward trend," said State Labor Analyst Janice Shriver. "This is the sixth-consecutive month where our seasonal adjusted non-farm jobs in San Francisco particularly, have surpassed the prior peak at the end of 2000."
It's the highest it's been job wise in 15 years. While that sounds great on paper, it's a different story for people like Zack who are still looking for work.
"People who say the economy is getting better— and that might be the case, but I just reentered the job market. The job that I was working before it made it tough in terms of paying all my bills and covering the basics," he said.
He said many of the job postings he's seen are entry-level jobs that don't include health benefits.
In other news that bucks this positive trend, Dreamworks just announced that it will be closing down a unit in Redwood City that will eliminate 500 jobs.
