3 Armed Robbery Suspects Arrested After High Speed Chase Across Richmond Bridge, Fiery Crash
POINT RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- Police arrested three armed robbery suspects early Sunday morning after a high-speed chase led officers from multiple law enforcement agencies through two counties.
Around 1:40 a.m., Sonoma County California Highway Patrol officers alerted the Golden Gate Communications Center that they were pursuing suspects in a car driving southbound on U.S. Highway 101 in Petaluma believed to have been involved in an armed home invasion.
Marin CHP officers took over the pursuit around 1:50 a.m., as the suspects' black Mercury Mountaineer sped south along Highway 101 near the Marinwood exit at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
San Rafael police placed a spike strip on the highway, causing the suspects' right front tire to deflate.
The suspects exited the freeway at Andersen Drive in San Rafael and began driving the wrong way down the street, failing to stop at traffic lights.
The vehicle's shredded front tire came off and the suspect continued driving on a sparking wheel, and later, on nothing more than a rotor and partial wheel rim at 70 miles per hour over the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, police said.
Police caught up with the suspects after the SUV slowed to a halt at Montana Street and Buena Vista Avenue in Point Richmond.
The front of the car immediately burst into flames and personnel from the CHP, Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, Petaluma police and Richmond police arrested the three suspects.
