3.4 Magnitude Quake Strikes Near Pleasant Hill Day After 4.5 Rocks East Bay

PLEASANT HILL (CBS SF) -- Less than 24 hours after a 4.5 magnitude earthquake rocked the East Bay, a 3.4 quake struck the same area Tuesday evening.

Both quakes struck near Pleasant Hill, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. According to the map, the quake struck right next to Interstate 680.

It struck along an unnamed fault along the Concord and Calaveras faults. The epicenter of Tuesday's quake was at Contra Costa Boulevard and Gregory Lane under shopping center near the

downtown area.

USGS said there was a 2% chance of one or more aftershocks larger than the ones following Monday's quake over the next week. But officials also added that there could be as many as four aftershocks of magnitude 3 or higher.

BART said that the quake was causing trains to travel at reduced speeds as officials inspected tracks. The agency said to expect delays of 10-15 minutes.

Viewers told KPIX 5 on social media that the quake was a rather quick jolt.

CONTINUING EARTHQUAKE COVERAGE

Wendy Kress in Walnut Creek said it felt longer, however. "It lasted 4-5 seconds," Kress said.

Brittany Lynn Swearingen felt the tremor in Martinez. "[My] kids thought I was paranoid that it was my upstairs neighbor," Swearingen said.

Loran B. Anderson said, "Felt in Pittsburg! My family thought I was crazy!"

Also Tuesday, a 4.7 earthquake struck near Hollister along the San Andreas fault line in Central California, just two days before the 30th anniversary of the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake that hit along the same fault line in 1989.

"Nothing on this planet makes you feel smaller than an earthquake. I remember Loma Prieta. Longest 45 seconds of my life!" said Scott Irwin on Facebook.
