Suspect Identified In Sacramento Shootout, 2nd Victim Dies
SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) -- The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department has identified a suspect in a strip mall gunbattle that left two people dead, including a mother who police say was trying to protect her 2-year-old son.
Authorities say they are searching for 24-year-old Lonnie Orlando Mitchell of Sacramento and are warning residents to consider him armed and dangerous.
Detectives say they believe he was involved in Tuesday's violence, but can't say whether he was responsible for firing the shots that killed Monique Nelson or Marvion Barksdale.
Nelson had just strapped her son into his car seat when she was struck in the chest and detectives believe she had positioned herself to protect her son.
Five other men were injured in the gunfight. All are expected to survive.
Mitchell is described as 5'10" tall, weighing 180 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and numerous tattoos. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information on Mitchell's whereabouts is asked to contact homicide detectives at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP. Tipsters can also send a text message to 274637 with "SACTIP" at the beginning of the message.
Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
