2nd Set Of Tower Sections In Place On Bay Bridge

OAKLAND (AP) - Motorists using the Bay Bridge will see a taller signature tower the next time they cross, now that a second set of tower sections have been placed atop the existing structure.

The 107-foot-tall sections weighing more than 600 tons each were lifted 300 feet into the air and set in place last week.

Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said that the last section was bolted into place at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, about five hours ahead of schedule.

Three more sections are to be added by December to complete the 525-foot-tall tower.

The California Department of Transportation has expressed fears that the highly visible work on the $1.6 billion self-anchored suspension span could distract drivers, but Ney says there were no traffic problems.
