Bay Area Runners Win 40th San Francisco Marathon

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Two Bay Area residents, one from Marin County and one from the Peninsula, won the 40th annual San Francisco Marathon Sunday.

Jorge Maravilla, 39, of Mill Valley, won the men's marathon in 2:28:23, and Devin McMahon, 25, of Stanford, won the women's marathon in 2:52:49, according to a race spokeswoman.

"We'd like to congratulate the winners of the 2017 races and all the runners from near and far who participated in this year's races," Michelle LaFrance, vice president of the San Francisco Marathon, said in a statement.

Maravilla, the winner of the men's marathon, is an El Salvador native and general manager at the San Francisco Running Company. McMahon is a Ph.D student in earth-system science at Stanford University, the spokeswoman said.

 

The race started at 5:30 a.m. at Mission Street on the Embarcadero with the ringing of a bell by Byron Cobb, the Cable Car Bell Ringing World Champion. Runners began wending their way through San Francisco and onto the Golden Gate Bridge before finishing at Folsom Street and The Embarcadero.

  • Security was exceptionally tight on the 26.2 mile course during the predawn hours. Street closures and traffic detours remained in place throughout the city into the afternoon.

    For the first time in years, the Golden Gate Bridge's northbound lanes were completely shut down from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

    "Our runner safety is our top priority and we work with numerous and countless organizations up and thru race day to ensure we're taking precautions and augmenting plans as need be to ensure runner safety and security however we can for the spectators on course," says Michelle LaFrance, VP of Marketing for the race.

    All participants receive a long-sleeved shirt. Finishers receive a finisher's medal, free photos, electronic finisher's certificate and other gifts.

    The marathon raised more than $300,000 for charity.
