2 Men Killed In San Jose Crash While Fleeing CHP
Two men died when the car they were in crashed in downtown San Jose early Thursday morning as they allegedly fled from the California Highway Patrol, a police spokesman said.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m., police officers responded to the intersection of East St. James Street and North Sixth Street on a report of a vehicle that had crashed into two parked cars and overturned, San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia said.
The car that crashed contained four people—a 19-year-old man who was driving, a male passenger in the front seat and two more in the back, Garcia said.
The two men in the rear of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Garcia did not yet have their names or ages.
The driver and front-seat passenger were taken to a hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police received information that shortly before the crash, a CHP officer had tried to pull over the car in the area of Notre Dame and Carlysle streets, but it did not stop, Garcia said.
San Jose police are handling the investigation into the crash, while the CHP is investigating the events that led up to it, he said.
A San Jose CHP spokeswoman was not immediately available to comment on the incident.
