3 Dead In 2 Separate Crashes On Hwy 12 Near Santa Rosa
SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- Three people died in two separate crashes in rainy weather on state Highway 12 near Santa Rosa on Monday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The first crash was reported at 8:19 a.m. on eastbound Highway 12 just west of Oakmont Drive east of Santa Rosa, CHP Officer David deRutte said.
A 21-year-old Sonoma woman driving a black Nissan Sentra with her 44-year-old mother as a passenger were heading west on the highway when she lost control of the vehicle and it swerved to the left into the eastbound lanes, where a work truck traveling east struck the passenger side of the Nissan, deRutte said.
Both women in the Nissan died at the scene and their names haven't been released. The truck driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Just minutes later, at 8:23 a.m., another fatal crash occurred along Highway 12, this one just west of Merced Avenue west of Santa Rosa.
A 32-year-old Sebastopol man driving east in a Toyota Matrix swerved into the opposing lane and struck a Ford transit van, deRutte said. The transit van continued and hit an Acura RDX, while the Toyota continued west and hit a box van, causing the van to overturn onto its roof.
The 32-year-old Toyota driver died in the crash and his name has also not been released. The transit van driver suffered minor injuries, the two occupants of the box van were hospitalized but are expected to survive, and the Acura driver was uninjured, according to deRutte.
