2 Facing Charges After Shooting Of Undercover Oakland Officer
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Two men have been charged with assault on a peace officer and other crimes in connection with an attack on an undercover Oakland police officer in East Oakland on Jan. 21.
Damien McDaniel, 23, and Glenn Wilson were scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on the assault on a peace officer charge as well as assault with a semiautomatic firearm, second-degree robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
McDaniel and Wilson both have prior convictions for auto theft and possession of illegal weapons.
Officer Erick Karseeboom, 37, described as a veteran undercover cop, was sitting in a car on the 1700 block of Seminary Ave. last Monday at the time of the incident. McDaniel allegedly opened the passenger door to the car and grabbed one of Karseeboom's weapons from the center console, while two other suspects - one identified as Glenn Wilson - also pointed guns at him.
McDaniel apparently then tried to grab a weapon from the officer's waistband. A struggle ensued and the officer was pistol-whipped, then shot in the left forearm.
The suspects fled but a massive manhunt nabbed two of the three suspects.
According to the records on file, Karseeboom identified himself as a policeman during the struggle, but the suspects said they didn't believe him - and at one point allegedly said they didn't care.
"If you were going to shoot an officer then that doesn't prevent you from shooting other people because the risk you take when you shoot an officer is that the officer is going to return fire," reasoned Howard Jordan, Chief of Police. "If you're willing to take that risk, that means you're not willing to listen to anything else."

"The type of people we're dealing with in this particular incident, they're very dangerous people. These are people who are heavily armed, who have the mans and the motive to shoot at other people for no apparent reason," Jordan said.
Four days later, another Oakland police officer was shot in the leg by a hit and run suspect, who was subsequently arrested.
