2 Dead In Stunt Plane Crash Near Salinas Airport
SALINAS (CBS/AP) -- Federal regulators were investigating the crash of a stunt plane that went down in a field near the Salinas airport, killing both men onboard.
The single-engine plane that crashed Sunday was a two-seater, built in 1993 and designed for aerobatic competitions.
It was registered to a limited liability corporation based in Grand Forks, N.D., that does not have a public telephone listing.
Witnesses said they saw the plane performing aerial maneuvers before it fell from the sky and broke apart on impact three miles south of Salinas Municipal Airport.
No fire accompanied the crash, and firefighters pulled the bodies from the wreckage after investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board performed a preliminary assessment.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
