2 Dead In Crash Following CHP Chase In Oakland
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Two people were killed when a driver fleeing from the California Highway Patrol sped off the freeway and crashed his BMW into another car near the Foothill Square Shopping Center.
A man driving the second car, a sport utility vehicle, was killed instantly.
The CHP tried to pull the BMW over for speeding on Interstate 580 near 150th Avenue, said Officer Robert Tuazon. Instead of stopping, the driver zoomed off the freeway at Foothill and MacArthur boulevards and hit the SUV, already in the intersection.
KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:
Tuazon said the BMW driver then tried to run away from the scene of the crash, only to collapse in the middle of the street a short distance away, near the corner of 106th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities have not released the names of either victim.
Oakland police were investigating the crash and were interviewing the CHP officers involved, said Tuazon.
