Police Officer, Father Die In Plane Crash Near Auburn, Placer County Airport
AUBURN, Placer County (AP) -- A police officer and his father who were aboard a small plane died Friday when the plane crashed on a golf course shortly after taking off Friday in Placer County, authorities said.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office said Auburn area residents Anthony Lawrence Wright Jr., 55, and Anthony Lawrence Wright Sr., 80, were killed when their single-engine Stinson Vultee V-77 crashed about a mile from the Auburn Municipal Airport Friday morning.
A third person aboard the plane survived with unknown injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
Wright Jr. was a reserve officer and a full-time records officer with the Rancho Cordova Police Department.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office said the plane crashed at the Black Oak Golf Course. Video images of the crash site posted on social media by the sheriff's office showed the plane's wreckage among trees.
Scott Parker, commander for the California Highway Patrol in Auburn, said officers responded to the 13000 block of Dry Creek Road after receiving reports of a pilot making a distress call shortly after takeoff.
The FAA and NTSB will investigate.
