2 Chainz At The Top of Charts & Performs In Mountain View

MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS NEWS) - Just a day before his performance at Hip Hop festival, "Rock The Bells" in Mountain View, rapper "2 Chainz" topped the album chart this week with his debut solo release, "Based on a T.R.U. Story."

The set sold 147,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard, which cited Nielsen SoundScan figures. Sales topped expectations, as industry sources initially pinned sales between 130,000 and 140,000 copies. The "Now 43" collection had the No. 2 slot this week, followed by Rick Ross' "God Forgives, I Don't."

2 Chainz took to Twitter after hearing the news:

The Georgia native isn't a complete stranger to the charts. He has had 10 hit singles on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart since coming on the scene in 2011 under his previous stage name Tity Boi.

The rapper is the third artist to top the charts this year with a debut album. One Direction did it in March with "Up All Night," and Jack White followed suit in May with his solo effort, "Blunderbuss."

You can see 2 Chainz and the kings of hip hop at "Rock The Bells 2012" Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.
